It’s a compliment to the #justB storytelling campaign that focuses on the U.S. Each story is unique and is told by a person living with hepatitis B. Many of the topics covered by the storytellers include stigma, discrimination, access to healthcare and more.

Ntow’s story of living with hepatitis B in Ghana

Ntow found out she had hepatitis B after experiencing symptoms like headaches and loss of appetite. Facing discrimination from friends, she struggled with shame and isolation but, with her mother's support, continued her education. Ntow now focuses on living a healthy life, eating more fruits, and staying hydrated. She advises others with hepatitis B to take care of themselves, practice safe habits, and not be weighed down by others' opinions. Despite initial feelings of hopelessness, Ntow emphasizes the importance of seeking advice and moving forward with life.

Fr Benjamin’s story of living with hepatitis B in Ghana

Father Benjamin first learned about hepatitis B through his brother's diagnosis. Concerned about his brother's chronic cough, their family arranged for testing, which revealed that both his brother and their deceased sibling had the virus. While studying in the U.S., he learned more about hepatitis B and tried to find effective treatments for his brother, who was initially receiving herbal remedies. The situation worsened over the years, leading to his brother suffering from liver cirrhosis and eventually passing away. Father Benjamin described the experience as financially and emotionally taxing, resulting in significant stress and anxiety for him and his family as they navigated the challenges of his brother's illness.

Kattah’s story of living with hepatitis B in Ghana

Kattah's journey with hepatitis B began in 2012. Since then, he has regularly monitored his liver health and faced significant stigma from family members due to misunderstandings about how hepatitis B is transmitted. This stigma and discrimination have been a challenging part of his experience.

Recently, Kattah received a job offer but was rejected because of his hepatitis B status. Despite these setbacks, he is committed to improving his lifestyle by avoiding alcohol and drugs, exercising, and maintaining a balanced diet. Kattah's story highlights that people living with chronic hepatitis B can live long and healthy lives if they manage their condition well.

Philip’s story of living with hepatitis B in Ghana

Popularly named Action, or Action Man, Philip's brother was a pillar of his family and community and a father of three children, two boys and a girl. In 2017, Philip’s brother experienced many ups and downs in his health. After a series of tests, he was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Ashanti Region of Ghana. After being turned away and facing other difficulties, Philip’s brother stayed home, where his health deteriorated. Soon after, Philip took his brother to a different hospital for transport and treatment. Here, Philip stayed and watched his brother in his final days. After his brother’s death, Philip began campaigning to end mortality due to hepatitis B.
